The idea of connecting with current students has always been a motivating factor for me when it comes to donating. One of the most gratifying benefits of endowing an instrument in the UW Band is that I've been able to follow my students through their collegiate careers.

Types of Gifts

Unrestricted

These gifts are designated for unrestricted use by the chancellor, deans and department chairs for use in a college, program or subject area. The funds, which provide flexibility to respond immediately, are vital and make it possible to direct gifts to areas of greatest need and opportunity.

Designated

Some gifts are designated for specific uses such as professorships, scholarships and fellowships, research projects or capital improvements. Specified gifts may be further designated for use within a school, college, program, department or subject area, such as a professorship in family studies, a research fund in cancer or student prizes in engineering. Scholarship funds may be designated for students based on region, high school, merit, extracurricular activity and/or financial need. Faculty support includes chairs, professorships and faculty awards.

Immediate Use

You may choose to instruct the UW Foundation to allocate the gift amount for immediate disbursement. This is especially applicable in the case of a building or equipment gift, but it may apply to any non-endowment project.

Endowment Fund

You may choose to allocate the gift to establish an endowment fund and name it for family members or an honored individual. The fund generates annual expendable income for the purpose designated by you, and the principal remains in perpetuity.
